What can you accomplish in two weeks?

How about establishing a new business, completely renovating and furnishing a new space in the YK Centre Mall, and opening your doors for business.

That's exactly what Tammy Stewart and Karen Benedict did by they time they opened the doors on July 9 for Snippets Beauty Salon, located in the lower level of the mall beside Gourmet Cup.

Stewart and Benedict, both journeyman stylists with more than 50 years experience between them, had developed a strong clientele over the about 15 years they were stylists at Northern Flair before it closed last month.

"It was sprung on us," Stewart said. "Northern Flair was shutting down so we decided to try it ourselves."

The new space is about 100-square-feet larger than Northern Flair, and the floor plan is more wide-open than their former workspace.

Snippets has four chairs, shampoo and hair colour stations, and three stylists. Trina Sibbeston is the third stylist. The fourth chair will eventually be filled as the client base grows.

"We take mostly appointments, but walk-ins are welcome," Benedict said.

Snippets will be offering everything you'd expect: colours, perms, highlights, up-dos, pre-ordered hair extensions.

If there were any products their customers had become accustomed to through Northern Flair, they can still get those products at Snippets.

"We're pretty much carrying the same products as upstairs," Stewart said. "Joico, Diva Curl, and Quantum."

Northern Properties, the YK Centre Mall owners, was in charge of preliminary renovations, while Stewart and Benedict took care of the interior design, including everything from the paint on the walls to the new stylist chairs.

Look for a grand opening later this summer in conjunction with the back-to-school season.
