South Baffin MLA David Joanasie is facing impaired driving charges stemming from an incident in Charlottetown, P.E.I. the evening of July 7.

"I accept full responsibility for my actions and make no excuses for my lack of judgment," Joanasie said in an apologetic statement released July 11. "I am very grateful that nobody was injured as a result of this incident."

Joanasie is scheduled to appear in provincial court in Charlottetown on Sept. 4.

"When the legislative assembly subsequently reconvenes for its fall sitting, I will accept whatever discipline my colleagues deem appropriate under the circumstances," said Joanasie in his statement.

The 31-year-old is the youngest member to serve in the Nunavut legislature.

"I fully recognize that I will need to work hard to regain the trust and confidence of the residents of Cape Dorset and Kimmirut, and I apologize unreservedly to my family, constituents and colleagues for my conduct."

Joanasie was taking a personal trip to Charlottetown on a family matter at the time of the incident.
