Tribute for Sana'a

A tribute is being held Saturday for Sana'a Michael Christensen-Blondin, the two-year-old boy

who was killed after being run over by a truck in Kam Lake last Saturday.

Jocelyn Christensen, the boy's mother, said people will begin gathering at the Chief Drygeese Centre in Dettah at 11:30 a.m.

"Anyone and everyone wishing to honour sweet Sana'a is welcome," said Christensen.

The tribute will be at noon.

School bus accident

A Ndilo Elementary School bus carrying three children was hit by a car yesterday shortly after noon at Sissons Court. RCMP confirm there were no injuries. Police say the car, driven by an 18-year-old woman, ran into the bus as it was heading down the hill on Taylor Road. RCMP are investigating the incident and determining if criminal or highway traffic charges could be laid.

Food for library dues

Those with overdue fines at the Yellowknife Public Library can rid themselves of the debt from June 2 to 14 with the Food for Fines program. Each outstanding fine can be paid off with one piece of unexpired, non-perishable food. In order to have the fines waived, the overdue books must be returned as well. All of the food donations are being sent to Yellowknife's food bank.

Army cadets win grant

Yellowknife's Army Cadet Corps have won a $3,000 grant to help the unit get back on its feet after it suffered financial shortfalls over the past few years.

The money going to Yellowknife's 50-member unit will help fund wilderness training and community-oriented events. The grant was announced at a dinner in Ottawa April 26. Four other units across the country received the grant as well.

First golf tournament of the season

The Seven Spruce Golf Course's season is starting with the Luck of the Draw Opening Tournament set for May 24.

The tournament is following a new format this year with four-person teams being created through a random draw.

An effort will be made to create mixed teams with both male and female members, said Roger Pilling, who is organizing the event along with Kim Hardisty.

Participants can register beginning at 9 a.m. and the tee off will be an hour later.

Teams will play 18 holes following a scramble format.

The tournament is free for anyone who has paid their membership fee at the club. A potluck is set to be held afterward.

Slo-pitch competition in Fort Simpson

A mixed slo-pitch tournament will be held in Fort Simpson next month.

The tournament is set to take place from June 20 to 22. Teams must register by June 19 and can do so by calling the Fort Simpson Recreation Centre.

The tournament will include prizes of $1,500, $800 and $500 for the top three teams respectively. There will also be a number of awards including most valuable player, top batter and most sportsmanlike.

A dance will be held in conjunction with the tournament.

Gardeners get ready

The Fort Simpson Community Garden has begun taking memberships and assigning garden boxes.

Fees and membership forms can be submitted at the garden May 25 or June 1 from 1 to 2 p.m. or May 27 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Last year's garden members have until June 1 to keep their former boxes. Unassigned boxes will be given out on a first-come basis.

Individual members are eligible for one box while family memberships can have two.

Fort Providence gets youth active

A series of activities has been scheduled for every weeknight at the Deh Gah School gym in Fort Providence.

Games for students in kindergarten to Grade 3 will be offered indoors from 4 to 5 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and outdoors the other two days.

The gym is open to students in Grades 4 to 8 between 7 to 8:30 p.m. and from Grade 9 to adults from 8:30 to 10 p.m.

On Fridays from 7 to 10 p.m., the gym and cafeteria will be open for all students to play and hang out.

More vandalism at daycare

The Children's First Centre was damaged by vandalism once again over the May long weekend for the third time in five weeks.

"Sometime between Friday at 8 p.m. and Tuesday at 8 a.m. this past long weekend, a window in the gym at the Children's First Centre was smashed," said board chair Fraser Pearce.

"This is the third act of vandalism against the centre in a little under five weeks. From the looks of it, someone was throwing rocks at the building from below and, in doing so, broke the window.

"Fortunately a screen prevented any of the glass from shattering into the centre, and no one was in the building at the time, so no injuries occurred."

The damage estimate runs "at least a couple, if not a few thousand, dollars to repair as the entire window will need to be replaced and must be sourced from outside Inuvik," Pearce said. "Obviously, vandalism of any sort is upsetting, but it is particularly frustrating that a children's daycare is being targeted so frequently. It is very difficult for the children attending the centre as they don't understand why someone would break a window on purpose. On a community level, it is very disappointing to see the lack of respect that some individuals have for the huge amounts of time, money and effort that have gone into this facility."

Pearce said security cameras will be installed this week.

Teenager faces charges

A 16-year-old youth was charged last week in connection to damage to a vehicle in Inuvik.

Few details are being released so far but RCMP officials said the arrest isn't believed to be directly related to the spate of vandalism and break-ins to taxis and other vehicles over the last 10 weeks or so.

"A 16-year-old has been charged and is scheduled to make a court appearance June 11," said RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Barry Ledoux.

The youth has been charged with three counts of mischief and three counts of theft.

Badminton tournament

A badminton tournament is scheduled to be held May 31 and June 1 at East Three Secondary School. The event is open to all ages from high school through adult. There will be adult and youth categories.

The cost is $10 for students and $20 for adults.

All skill levels are welcome.

No injuries in fire

There were no injuries in a house fire on Dolphin Street May 14.

Firefighters responded to the call at a row house about 11:30 p.m. The occupant of the row house escaped from the fire without assistance. Some neighbours were briefly evacuated. The cause remains under investigation.

Businessman wins $10,000

Jim McDonald, a local businessman with McDonald Brothers Electrical and the deputy mayor of Inuvik, won the $10,000 prize in a fund-raising draw for the Children's First Society.

McDonald is planning to donate half of that money back to the society, said board chair Fraser Pearce.
