Drunk driver fined

An impaired man who drove his vehicle into a ditch and was later found to have crack-cocaine on him was fined $1,725 and banned from driving for a year on Friday.

A bylaw officer watched as the 36-year-old drove into a ditch in Kam Lake Nov. 3, 2012. The officer found two small rocks of crack-cocaine on him, while a breathalyzer test showed nearly twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system.

Judge Garth Malakoe fined the man $300 for cocaine possession, $1,200 for impaired driving, plus a 15 per cent surcharge on the fines.

Norseman Drive closed

Norseman Drive was blocked off at the intersection of Franklin Avenue as of Tuesday, as construction at Northland Trailer Park gets underway for the summer.

Local traffic will still be able to access the trailer park from the intersection of Norseman Drive and Old Airport Road. Bus services will also be detoured, with temporary bus stops provided on either side of Old Airport Road at Norseman Drive.

Maps detailing the affected areas are available on the city's website.

The road will remain closed until work is completed.

Bird lovers unite

Ecology North is holding another spring bird walk Thursday evening that will take bird-watchers around Niven Lake.

Birding experts will join the walk and help identify the migrated birds seen along the trails. The walk will begin at the Ecology North office no later than 5:15 p.m., or at the west end of the bridge closest to the highway in Niven Lake at 5:30 p.m.

During the last walk May 10, 27 different species were identified.

Summer hours at city hall

Residents are reminded that city hall has switched over to its summer hours as of May 20.

The building will now be open to the public from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Summer hours will continue until Aug. 29.

Derby fishers have close call

Arviat

The annual fishing derby in Arviat almost ended on a tragic note when drilling instructor Rob Hood of New Liskeard, Ont., and local resident Robert Gibbons, a former student of Hood's, ran into trouble on their way back to the community.

Hood, 59, and Gibbons, 23, were in the Maguse Lake area for a fishing derby when they decided to return to Arviat on Saturday, May 10.

They had no survival gear when they left and, hours later, found themselves stranded after taking the wrong trail, having a belt on their machine break and almost completely running out of gas.

A searchandrescue attempt was launched Monday, May 12, but they were eventually found by hunter John Tugak and returned safely to Arviat late in the evening of Tuesday, May 13.

Both men were in good health upon their return.

N-Camp grads announced

Coral Harbour

The 11 participants to complete the Nunavut Community Aquatic Monitoring Program (NCamp) in Coral Harbour this past month are David Saimaut, John Pameolik, Jake Netser, Greg Ningeocheak, Jonathon Emiktowt, Rachel Emiktowt, Darcy Nakoolak, Troy Netser, Logan Kadlak, Tamara Kolit and Charlie Shapagnak.

The fishdatagathering program was held by Nunavut's Department of Environment.

Scholarships offered

Kivalliq

Kivalliq students planning to attend a postsecondary institution in 201415 are reminded the deadline for applying to Northwestel for one of six $4,000 scholarships is July 31.

Northwestel provides the $4,000 scholarships to Northern residents across its operating area.

The successful applicants must be attending postsecondary education in commerce/business, engineering, electrical, telecommunications or computer sciences.

Priority for three of the six awards is given to aboriginal students.

The successful applicants will also receive a letter of offer guaranteeing them a position with Northwestel for the upcoming summer.

Soccer champs claim victory

Rankin Inlet

The Rankin Inlet girls' soccer team defeated St. Patrick's High School 51 to claim the A Division's U19 title at Senior Super Soccer in Yellowknife earlier this month.

Both Coral Harbour's and Rankin Inlet's girl's teams in the U19 AA Division made it to the semifinals before being eliminated by Yellowknife teams.

Big bucks for cod

Arviat

A whopping $15,000 will be up for grabs to fishers of all ages this coming weekend in Arviat.

The community is hosting its annual cod fishing derby from May 23 to 25.

Last chance for Vball

Rankin Inlet

The deadline to enter a team for the annual Laura Gauthier Memorial (LGM) volleyball championship in Rankin Inlet is this coming Friday, May 23.

The event features thrilling action in both men's and women's divisions.

The 2014 LGM will be held in Rankin Inlet from May 30 to June 1.
