Aurora College launches adult education in Enterprise

ENTERPRISE
Almost a year after the idea was first suggested, an adult education class offered by Aurora College has begun in Enterprise.

Three people showed up the evening of April 10 for the beginning of a computer literacy course.

"I think it's just wonderful," said one of the students, Bruce Proud, about the opportunity to attend the class in Enterprise.

The hamlet council requested courses in Enterprise because Aurora College receives about $14,000 a year from the Department of Education, Culture and Employment to offer adult literacy and basic education courses in the community.

Previously, the college had asked the hamlet if there was a need for adult education courses in Enterprise and was told there wasn't. So the money allocated for the community was used at the Hay River Community Learning Centre and people could attend from Enterprise.

Ken Latour, the college's regional program head for the Akaitcho and the South Slave, began thinking a year ago about what courses could be offered in Enterprise.

"So it's been a little while," he said, adding he's pleased a class has begun. "It's progress."

The basic introduction to computers will be offered once a week and is expected to run to about the end of June, depending on the wishes of students.

Plus, a couple of students in Enterprise have registered for Grade 12 courses with the Alberta Distant Learning Centre, and Aurora College will help them with their individual education.

If all goes well, the college may offer other courses in Enterprise in the fall.

Mayor John Leskiw II is pleased to see the classes start, noting, "Anything that's going to enhance the community, I'm supporting."
