Let's talk about child protection
Assistant Auditor General Ronnie Campbell is in Yellowknife this week to hold a two-day review of his office's scathing report on Child and Family Services in the NWT.
The report, which was tabled in the legislative assembly March 4, found that 69 per cent of foster parents were not properly screened prior to children being placed in their care, along with other major discrepancies.
The review is open to the public and will begin at 1:30 p.m. today in Committee Room A at the legislative assembly. Department of Health and Social Services officials will be on hand at 3:30 p.m. The Standing Committee on Government Operations, chaired by Deh Cho MLA Michael Nadli, will continue its review of the report 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

Ice road to Dettah closed
As of Monday at 5 p.m., the winter ice road from Yellowknife to Dettah is closed for the season. The road typically closed by April 15 in years past, according to Earl Blacklock, manager of communications for the Department of Transportation (DOT).
This year, the road was open for 129 days, 10 days longer than last year. DOT warns motorists on its website that driving on a closed ice road is a criminal offense subject to a fine of more than $800.

Solid waste forum
The city will be hosting its annual solid waste public forum in conjunction with Ecology North's Earth Week celebrations at Northern United Place tonight at 7 p.m.
Peter Houweling, the superintendent of the Solid Waste Facility, will be talking to residents about the city's waste reduction and recovery programs as well as some upcoming projects.
Mayor Mark Heyck will also be handing out the city's recycling awards.

Yellowknife Multisport Club AGM
Tonight at 7 p.m., the Yellowknife Multisport Club is holding its annual general meeting (AGM).
The club is looking for volunteers with fresh ideas on club management and future event planning. Even if you just want to become involved as a volunteer in the events Yellowknife Multisport puts together every year, consider coming out for this evening's AGM.

Victor Sammurtok faces fears
Chesterfield Inlet
Students in grades one and two took part in a funfilled and sometimes grossedout Fear Factor Challenge at Victor Sammurtok School in Chesterfield Inlet this past week.
The Fear Factor Challenge was planned and organized by teacher Vicki Tanuyak.

Police investigate sudden death
Baker Lake
The Baker Lake detachment of the RCMP began an investigation this past Wednesday, April 16, into the sudden death of an adult female at a local residence in Baker.
The woman is reportedly around 40 years old.
The RCMP Major Crimes Unit and Forensic Identification Services out of Iqaluit were called in to assist the Baker detachment and the Office of the Chief Coroner with the investigation. The body of the woman was sent out for an autopsy to be performed. There was no news on the autopsy report as of press time, and the RCMP are not releasing the name of the deceased.
Repulse gears up for cup
Repulse Bay
The community of Repulse Bay is gearing up for a weekend of hockey action as Repulse hosts the Arctic Circle Cup senior mens' hockey championship from April 25 to 27.
As of press time, two teams from host Repulse and squads from Rankin Inlet, Coral Harbour and Arviat were expected to compete at the event.
Cuffed for charity
Chesterfield Inlet
Victor Sammurtok School staff and students chipped in their support of a mock jail fundraiser held for Northern Youth Abroad (NYA) students Mason Tautu and Aaron Alogut in Chesterfield Inlet this past week.
The mock jail raised a grand total of $1,290 for the NYA students.
Leaders round up in Manitoba
Churchill/Kivalliq
Kivalliq mayors and other community leaders travelled to Churchill, Man., this past week to attend the Hudson Bay Neighbours Regional Roundtable.
The April 1617 meetings were also attended by various Northern Manitoba leaders and mayors, as well as representatives from Inuit organizations, the federal government and Government of Nunavut.

Magical visit for Inlet
Rankin Inlet
Manitoba magician and entertainer Brian Glow will be performing a magic show at the Rankin Inlet Community Hall on Wednesday, April 30, at 7:30 p.m. as part of the Pakallak Tyme celebrations.
Known as the "master of illusion and fun," Glow's performance promises to be a funfilled event for kids of all ages.
