Nunavut News/North is the proud recipient of three Ontario Community Newspaper Association (OCNA) Better Newspapers Competition awards.

The newspaper was honoured with first place in the General Excellence category for its circulation class, earning top marks for providing readers with community-based content.

"Nunavut News/North is catering to the people of the North in a way they can relate to and it works," stated judges Vern Faulkner of the Saint Croix Courier/Courier Weekend, Sarah Holmes of the Gabriola Sounder and Pirjo Raits of the Sooke News Mirror in the newspaper competition's results booklet. "It is a refreshing change from the usual community newspapers and the editors and writers deserve a lot of credit. Wonderful job."

In addition, out of 64 entries, reporter Peter Worden was awarded first place for the best-written environmental piece for "Collar opposition mounts," a Nunavut News/North story which examined whether polar bear researchers were needlessly invading and harming the animals by collaring them.

"This is a really well-developed article," stated judge Sheena Read. "Polar bears are such a hot topic these days, and this brought a different aspect to the discussion. Well done."

Nunavut News/North won second place in the Best Special Section category for NWT/Nunavut Mining.

"If you want to know about how the economy is doing in Northern Canada, the NWT/Nunavut Mining publication displays it all," stated judge Joyce Carlson of the Powell River Peak.

It was a pleasure for the newspaper to be recognized for its commitment to provide Nunavummiut with people-focused news that goes beyond the 24-hour news cycle.

"It takes a great team effort and we are all proud of Nunavut News/North," said Mike Scott, general manager of Northern News Services, which publishes Nunavut News/North.

"Ontario has the largest provincial community newspaper association in Canada and we were up against stiff competition. It's nice to be recognized by our peers.

"Nunavut is a great place with strong readership and Nunavut News/North reflects this. We look forward to continue serving Nunavummiut with great newspapers."
