Accused murderer in Yk court

A 17-year-old male charged with first degree murder appeared in Youth Justice Court in Yellowknife Monday morning.

The youth is alleged to have killed Charlotte Ann Lafferty, 17, in Fort Good Hope early Saturday morning.

Wearing a red sweater with short black hair, the youth sat in a protected enclosure in the Yellowknife courtroom. No date for a bail hearing has been set. The accused, whose identity is protected by a publication ban, is set to appear in court again Wednesday morning.

Expect calls from the city

The City of Yellowknife is set to conduct a phone survey next month, as it tries to discern the most important issues for citizens and how people feel about the city's performance.

Ipsos-Reid will dial a random sample of 800 residents aged 18 and older between April 2 and 13, according to a city press release.

City council will be using the information to make decisions on future planning and budgets.

Devolution gets royal assent

The federal government gave royal assent to the NWT Devolution Act on March 25, marking the final step in approving the legislation.

With royal assent granted, George Tuccaro, the Commissioner of the Northwest Territories, is expected to give assent to ten devolution bills at the Great Hall of the legislative assembly today at 10 a.m.

The event is open to members of the public.

TerraX begins drilling

TerraX, has begun drilling on its Northbelt property as part of its Yellowknife City Gold project. The mining company's work will start out on Homer Lake and will continue for the next six to eight weeks while the company can still access the property via the ice road.

This will be the first time there has been exploration drilling for gold on the property in 18 years.

Science time

Arviat/Kivalliq

John Arnalukjuak High School is set to host the annual Kivalliq Regional Science Fair this coming weekend in Arviat.

The Kivalliq Science Educator's Community is celebrating its 30th anniversary at this year's event.

Science students from across the region will be in Arviat trying to earn the right to represent the Kivalliq at the CanadaWide Science Fair in Windsor, Ontario, from May 10 to 17.

Most excellent adventure

Whale Cove

The team of hockey players from Whale Cove to travel to Ontario are having an adventure they won't soon forget.

The team is coached by Inuglak School teacher Andrew McFarlane, who also spearheaded a fundraising drive to raise the money needed to make the trip possible.

After playing a number of exhibition games in Greenstone, the Whale Cove players then teamed up with 12 players from Geraldton High School to travel to Toronto to compete in a threeonthree tournament.

The Whale players also got to take in a Toronto Maple Leafs NHL game while visiting The Big Smoke.

Dogged conflict

More than 200 people have signed a petition in Arviat to have a husband-and-wife team stopped from seizing dogs in the community.

The petitioners claim Ian James and Tasha Kaulback have no authority to seize a dog and are stealing the animals, while the Kaulbacks claim to be saving dogs that are malnourished and/or in other forms of distress.

Bravery takes centre stage

Michael Illnik will be recognized during a general student assembly at Levi Angmak Elementary School in Arviat this coming Monday, March 31.

Illnik has won a Commissioner's Award for Bravery for his actions in saving his friend, Ethan (Glue) Tassiuk, from a dog attack a few years ago.

The story also caught the attention of Australia's (Uncle) Bob Carveth, who is wellknown for sending learning material and equipment to Kivalliq schools.

Uncle Bob has sent Illnik a new camcorder for his bravery.

Woman's photo takes prize

Coral Harbour

Sarah Netser of Coral Harbour took third place for her effort, Kakivak Fishing, in the Qulliit Status of Women Council's International Women's Day Photo Competition.

The announcement was made earlier this month at the Nunatta Sunakkutaangit Museum in Iqaluit.

Top prize went to Elder Helper in the Igloo, submitted by Lisi Kavik of Sanikiluaq, while Margaret Joyce of Gjoa Haven took second spot for her photo, Our Future Women of Gjoa Haven.

Game on

Repulse Bay

The Hamlet of Repulse Bay is trying to resurrect its Arctic Circle Cup senior men's hockey tournament.

The hamlet is gauging interest from senior men's teams across the Kivalliq, as well as from communities in the Baffin and Kitikmeot regions.

The Arctic Circle Cup is tentatively set for the April 25 weekend if enough teams show interest in competing.
