Residential school commemorative event

Liidlii Kue First Nation will be holding a community event on March 26 to commemorate the two residential school hostels that were in the village.

The Assembly of First Nations is sponsoring the evening of events, which will be like a reunion for former students, and providing a marker for both Bompas and Lapointe Hall. The evening will begin with a community feast at 6 p.m. followed by a comedy show by aboriginal comedian Howie Miller at 7:30 p.m. A drum dance will follow at 9 p.m.

Fibre link moves along

The Mackenzie Valley Fibre Link is moving forward.

The territorial government has filed a permitting application to the Mackenzie Valley Land and Water Board for preliminary screening of the project. The government is proposing to bury a 1,115 kilometre long fibre optic cable between Inuvik and Checkpoint.

The project is expected to improve the delivery of government services like telehealth, as well as distance education and support the development of Inuvik as a leading centre for remote satellite sensing. The completion of the line is predicted for the summer of 2016.

Arts program rebranded

The Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment has launched a rebranded NWT Arts Program.

A new website that promotes the diversity, value and authenticity of NWT art is the main element of the program. The website is designed to connect people with registered NWT artists, retailers and organizations.

Educational brochures and marketing material are available at no cost to artists registered with the program.

Winter roads still open

There are varying conditions on the two community winter access roads in the Deh Cho. The winter road to Trout Lake has been restricted to nighttime driving, between 10 p.m. and 10 a.m., only for all vehicles since March 14. The restriction is a safety precaution, said John Suwala, the regional manager for highway operations with the Department of Transportation.

There is currently no estimated closure date for the road, it is being monitored daily and colder temperatures over the next week are looking favourable, Suwala said.

The Nahanni Butte access road has been holding up well and may last to April 4, he said. The maintenance contractors and staff have done a great job on the winter roads this year and drivers and companies have been following the safety rules, said Suwala.

Rescue team meeting next week

There will be an information session next week to recruit members for Inuvik's new ground search-and-rescue team.

Jerry McKenna, an Inuvik RCMP member, has been working on reviving the team for about a year.

"This is not an RCMP team, it is a local volunteer group that could be utilized by the police during a lost or missing person incident, similar to the Inuvik Canadian Air Search and Rescue Association, which is tasked by the RCMP if required for a search incident."

A recruitment drive for team members is being held from March 17 to April 11.

The March 27 presentation and information session will be held at the fire hall from 7 to 9 p.m.

Hunter rescued

An 80-year-old hunter from Tuktoyaktok was rescued last week near Husky Lakes after a search that lasted more than one day.

Tuktoyaktuk RCMP responded to a complaint of an overdue hunter in the Husky Lakes area March

13.

The missing man had left Tuktoyaktuk with three other hunters at approximately 9:30 a.m., and became separated from his hunting companions later in the morning.

An immediate search and rescue operation was initiated by the RCMP and the first search team was dispatched at about 1:30 a.m. March 14.

Searching continued throughout the day, utilizing ground search teams, a search aircraft with Canadian Air Search and Rescue Association (CASARA) spotters from Inuvik and the RCMP aircraft from Yellowknife. The Canadian Forces Rangers were also asked to assist.

On March 15, the hunter was spotted from the CASARA aircraft. A ground search team, dispatched from Tuktoyaktuk, reached him at 4:30 p.m. March 15.

The man was partially hypothermic and said his snowmachine had become stuck in deep snow after he had shot three caribou.

He remained by his snowmachine for over two days and had not slept. He refused medical attention.

Soccer tourney this weekend

The first Beaufort-Delta Education Council sponsored indoor soccer tournament will be held at East Three school this weekend.

The tournament will be similar in format to the three-on-three and five-on-five tournaments organized by the school and BDEC earlier in the year.

There will be several youth divisions and a community division. Teams will play four-on-four.
