On March 6, while on patrol in Wrigley, members of the RCMP satellite office in the community did a traffic stop that led them to start a drug investigation under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
The investigation led to the seizure of approximately 2.3 kilograms of marijuana and a significant amount of cash, according to a press release from the Fort Simpson RCMP.
A 46-year-old male from Salmo, B.C. was arrested and charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of property obtained by crime. The man is scheduled to make a second appearance in territorial court in Fort Simpson May 28.
The RCMP wouldn't release the exact amount of money that was seized. Sgt. Barry Ledoux, with media relations for the G division, did say the quantity of marihuana is notable.
"We consider that to be a significant amount," he said.
As part of their investigation, the RCMP are trying to determine whether the drugs were destined for Wrigley or another community, potentially one on the Mackenzie Valley winter road system.
"We're not sure of his exact intent," Ledoux said.
Members of the public are encouraged to contact the Fort Simpson RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers to provide any information they may have about the illicit drug trade in their community.
The RCMP said the investigation in Wrigley is part of their continued commitment and effort to ensure safe homes and communities in the territory.
