A nuatqatigiit, a small community of iglus, sprang up on the ice near Taloyoak last month as students from Netsilik School participated in Career and Technology Week from Feb. 10 to 14.

Students who chose wildlife studies out of a selection of 10 options learned survival skills, which this term meant learning how to build an iglu, said principal Gina Pizzo.
First, instructors Tommy Aiyout and Kevin Eetoolook, with elder Abraham Uquqtunnuaq, showed students the proper way to build a snow shelter. Then, students were tasked with each building their own one-man iglu by the end of the week.
"It was bitterly cold that week with wind chills dipping into the -50s, so the instructors and students are to be commended for sticking it out the whole week," said Pizzo.
Many other classes and community members visited the nuatqatigiit throughout the course of the following week.
