HAY RIVER
Two people – a man and a woman in their 50s – have been found deceased in a cabin at a campground in the Hay River area.

The Hay River RCMP were called on Oct. 13 to check on the well-being of two individuals in the cabin.

According to an RCMP news release, officers found the deceased inside the cabin. Foul play is not suspected.

"An examination of the scene just basically is an indicator to that," said Cpl. Barry Ledoux, media relations officer with the RCMP's 'G' Division in Yellowknife, of the determination that no criminal activity caused the deaths.

The RCMP spokesperson said the cause of death will be determined by autopsy, noting there was nothing at the scene to indicate how the man and woman died.

Cathy Menard, the chief coroner of the NWT, said the identities of the deceased have been determined. However, the names were not being released as of Oct. 15.

Menard said the bodies of the two deceased individuals will be sent to Edmonton for post-mortem examination.

"The NWT Coroner's Service is hoping to have preliminary results by the end of the week," she said.

No information was available as to whether the two deceased individuals were from Hay River or some other community.

Menard noted on Oct. 15 that the investigation by the NWT Coroner's Office and the RCMP is still in its early stages.

Teenager charged with gun offences

In a separate incident in the Hay River area, a teenager on the Hay River Reserve has been charged with gun-related offences as the result of an incident on the evening of Oct. 11.

According to an RCMP news release, the Hay River detachment received a call from K’atlodeeche First Nation regarding shots being fired.

Members of the Hay River RCMP, 'G' Division Traffic Services and the Police Dog Service responded to the scene. A brief ground search was conducted utilizing the police dog and resulted in the apprehension of a suspect.

Wade Fabian, an 18-year-old male from K'atlodeeche First Nation, was arrested and is facing a number of Criminal Code charges, including careless use of a firearm, pointing a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, breach of a recognizance and assault with a weapon.

No one was injured during the incident.

Fabian, who was remanded in custody, is scheduled to make his next court appearance in Territorial Court in Yellowknife on Oct. 16.
