Right place. Right time. An Alberta man is facing seven charges after allegedly breaking into a residence while RCMP officers were inside over the weekend.

RCMP were responding to a report of suspicious activity at the Nova Court apartments on Saturday around 2 p.m. A woman said her hotel room had been broken into a number of times over the last few days. She noticed some personal items missing or out of place.

As the RCMP officer checked the room, a noise was heard at the balcony door - a man was climbing into the room.

"He was certainly startled to find an RCMP officer in the room," said RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Roxanne Hudym.

The man was immediately arrested. After being searched, he was found to have some of the complainants personal items in his pockets, according to a news release from the RCMP.

Police suspect people in other rooms may have had items stolen, and are asked to contact Yellowknife RCMP or Crime Stoppers.

Alberta resident Andre Mambweni Mpika, 32, has been charged with breaking and entering, possession of property obtained by crime, failing to comply with probation orders and failing to comply with court conditions in connection with the break-in.

Mpika appeared in justice of the peace court on Sunday and was released on $1,500 bail. He is next scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 22.
