The Aug. 29 event was the joint effort of Kivalliq Arctic Foods (KAF) and Nunavut Development Corp. (NDC) as a way of thanking the community for its support during the summer.

KAF general manager Todd Johnson said the barbecue was fun, adding that staff members from both NDC and KAF in Rankin Inlet helped out with the festivities.

"(Residents) provide KAF with fish every summer through the Papiruq Fisheries plant in Whale,” Johnson said of the local licensed fishers who harvest their catch from commerical water bodies. "They provided us with a little more then 7,000 pounds in 2012 and, this year, they provided us with 9,000 pounds of fish."

Johnson said KAF works in partnership with the Hunters and Trappers Organization (HTO) in Whale.

He said the company greatly appreciates the efforts of the HTO, as well as the fantastic amount of support it receives from the Hamlet of Whale Cove.

"Everyone in the community brought their appetites to the barbecue,” Johnson said.

This certainly rang true, with the barbecue going through 200 hamburgers, 160 hotdogs, 11.3 kg of caribou, 11.3 kg pounds of char and about 57 litres of orange juice.

"We also work in partnership with the HTO in Chesterfield Inlet and appreciate its support, as well,” he said. "We look forward to holding something like this in Chester in, hopefully, the not-too-distant future."

NDC president Darrin Nichol said it's a good working relationship between Kivalliq Arctic Foods, Chesterfield Inlet and Whale Cove during the summer fishery.

Some people in Rankin Inlet have also been providing fish to the plant during the summer, he said.

"The barbecue was a great way to wind up the year," said Nichol. "It was a way for us to say thanks to the community for its support."
