Over a two-hour span, about a dozen industry experts will meet with conference members for only a ten-minute window as part of a new event at Prospects North, which is being held early next month.

Peter Vician: The deputy minister will be among the networking participants.

Dubbed "speed-networking" by Mike Bradshaw, conference organizer and NWT Chamber of Commerce executive director, the event will feature several of Prospects North's speakers seated at tables in the Explorer Hotel's Janvier room. Delegates who register will drop by for 10-minute visits with their chosen expert.

"A really important aspect of conferences is that people with mutual interests can do some networking, so we decided to step it up to another level so you're not fighting to be heard over other conversations or ambient noise," Bradshaw explained.

"You get enough time to introduce yourself, exchange business cards, decide if there's an opportunity or need to set up another meeting and have an additional conversation, then - boom - your 10 minutes is up and the next person comes to the table."

Participants include Patrick Borbey, CanNor president; Susanna Cluff-Clyburne, director of parliamentary affairs with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce; Cynthia Westaway, lawyer with Borden Ladner Gervais law firm; Patricia Mohr, vice-president at Scotiabank's executive offices in Toronto; Nalini Naidoo, director of communications and economic development for the City of Yellowknife; Tom Stubbs, president of the Headwater Strategy Group; and Peter Vician, deputy minister of the Department of Industry, Trade and Investment.

National Post editor-at-large and author Diane Francis is scheduled to be the conference's keynote speaker.

Other speakers scheduled to appear at Prospects North include Clare Basler, chief operating officer of Kitikmeot Corporation; Roy Erasmus Jr., Det'on Cho Corporation president; Premier Bob McLeod; Gaeton Caron, National Energy Board chair and CEO; and Michele McKenzie, Canadian Tourism Commission president and CEO.

Panel discussion topics will cover various industries, such as oil and gas.

Prospects North is being organized by the NWT Chamber of Commerce from Sept. 9 to 11.

The NWT Chamber of Commerce, which represents a network including community chambers in Fort Simpson, Inuvik, Norman Wells, Hay River, Yellowknife, and Fort Smith, defines itself as the largest business organization North of 60.
