A nearby resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, said he heard sirens from his home and then began smelling smoke.

The man said fire crews had the blaze out within 10 to 12 minutes.

"It didn't take them long to put it out, not long at all," he said.

A $25-million, 6,000-square-foot GNWT office building currently under construction is also in the area, as is, the Joe Tobie Building.

Marchiori stated the fire department was put on full group alert, sending out 23 members and seven vehicles to the scene. A ground crew protected office buildings while an aerial operator attacked the fire with a water stream from the top of a ladder.

The fire destroyed the shed and its contents, but Marchiori credits the quick actions of the street sweeper and firefighters with containing the damage to the outside of l'Association culturelle de Yellowknife's office.

Office staff were allowed back into the building shortly after the shed fire was extinguished.

There were no injuries. The fire is being investigated by the Yellowknife fire department, which hadn't determined a cause for the blaze at press time.
