Junior Mantla knows achieving his goals is going to take hard work and perseverance. That's why the 18-year-old plans to continue his work with Gameti's recreation department long after his summer job is finished.

Mantla started out as a summer student, helping recreation co-ordinator Pamela Quitte. Now that the season is coming to a close, Mantla is staying on as the new part-time assistant recreation co-ordinator. He graduated this year from Jean Wetrade Gameti School.

He said the job will help him save money to pursue a film career. Mantla said he hopes to attend post-secondary school in either Vancouver or Toronto this coming spring.

"I'm actually hoping to become a film director," he said. "I'm hoping to save up money so I can leave in January or March."

Mantla said this was his first year working for the department, which he said he enjoyed.

"It's a good job to work during the summer because you get to work with kids and youth. It's good to see them and it's fun doing it during the summer," said Mantla.

Mantla said his usual duties over the summer included helping to supervise youth at the community gym from 7 until about 11 p.m.

He helped organize sports and activities and made sure the youth were behaving.

"We make sure they're having fun and not getting into trouble," he said. "They are usually just hanging

out with friends.

"We just make sure they're in a safe environment."

He also spent time supervising youth at the Gameti Youth Centre, as well as helping out with the summer day camp throughout July.

Mantla said he had a great time helping with the camp.

"It was actually pretty successful," he said. "It was during the afternoon and we did sports and arts and craft events."

Mantla said he's looking forward to continuing on with the recreation department until it's time for him to attend post-secondary school.

While he plans to dedicate his film directing to the horror genre, his favourite movie is about the value of work and recognizing those who do it.

Mantla said The Help, based on the book about housekeepers in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1962, is at the top of his list.

"That's probably my favourite movie of all time," he said. "I loved the book, too. It's amazing."
