Flash of generosity Arviat youth group receives four digital cameras

The donation of four digital cameras to an Arviat youth group is being looked upon as an incredible gesture of support for their efforts.

Jamie Bell of Nunavut Arctic College said members of the Arviat youth media and research team were pumped when informed a pair of visiting professional photographers were going to deliver a special workshop for them earlier this month.
Bell said Louise Abbott and Niels Jensen were working on Nunavut Tunngavik Inc.'s Cultural Resources Inventory Project in Arviat, documenting historical and archeological sites, when they agreed to conduct the workshop.
He said it came as a huge and wonderful surprise to learn the two had spoken with Sony Canada and that the company had donated four 20-megapixel Alpha DSLR (digital single-lens reflex) cameras and lenses to the Arviat group.
"I was just floored when (Abbot and Jensen) said they had a special little gift for our group and then produced these beautiful new cameras," said Bell.
The new cameras will replace the single decade-old SLR the film society had on hand for community projects with Nanisiniq and the like, Bell said.
"There were five students when we started a lot of this, and now there's more than 20 students and close to 10 teachers who have become involved, so this was just an incredible gesture of support from Sony."
Bell said the donation and the efforts of Abbott and Jensen to secure it will make a lasting contribution to the community.
He said it's exciting to know the youth can now work with professional equipment and is looking forward to seeing the results.
"Those cameras are a big boost to the youth of our community's ability to create and produce content to showcase a lot of the work they're doing," he said. "The kids have been out shooting like crazy since we received those cameras.
"So, this is something that's going to help us build a stronger arts and media community in Arviat and, for that, words fail me in trying to express our gratitude to Sony, Louise and Niels."
