Over 1,000 people gathered at the Multiplex on Saturday to try their luck at the Yellowknife Skating Club's $100,000 All Cash Bingo.

Twenty games with prizes worth anywhere from $500 to $3,500 were played from 3:30 p.m. until the jackpot game at 10 p.m.

The $30,000 jackpot was won by Sandra Bishop, who declined to comment to Yellowknifer about her newfound fortune.

Many players fanned themselves with used Bingo cards in the stuffy arena as they marked their numbers with ink daubers, but the moment the excited call of "Bingo!" was made during the jackpot game, almost everyone jumped to their feet to see who won - and then most promptly left.

The games were organized and monitored by volunteers from the skating club, wearing sky blue shirts and weaving in between the countless tables, checking Bingo cards and clearing old cards away, and manning the tables to sell new cards.

A troop of young skaters staffed a concession stand at one end of the arena. Throughout the night they managed to earn about $2,900 to go towards their club by selling pop and snacks.

Club treasurer Kristen Woldum said Monday that she hadn't tallied how much they raised from the game yet, but that the event went well.

"It was fantastic. I think we had a record number of people," said Woldum.

The funds raised will go towards assisting skaters with travel costs to go south for competitions, as well as purchasing supplies for the club's CanSkate and pre-CanSkate programs.
