A short, sharp bang - and a suspicious package left on a Range Lake residential property was gone.

Yellowknife RCMP were alerted to the package around 9 a.m. on Monday. Bomb experts from Edmonton were called to the scene shortly afterwards. They arrived around 4 p.m.

The members from the Explosives Disposal Unit made short work of the package. Officers laid yellow demolition cord across the lawn and driveway of a Magrum Crescent home, near Piro Court. Explosives were used to destroy the package around 4:30 p.m.

The section of Magrum Crescent, which had been evacuated and closed off by RCMP throughout the day, was reopened immediately after the explosion. Residents were allowed to return to their homes and traffic began to flow again.

RCMP evacuated the area early Monday morning as a precautionary measure until the explosive specialists arrived from Edmonton.

Cpl. Barry Ledoux, spokesperson for Yellowknife RCMP, said it is not known what the package contained, but the Forensic Identification Section will be doing an investigation.

The package was deemed non-lethal by RCMP.

Anyone with information on the package are asked to call Yellowknife RCMP or Crime Stoppers to assist with the investigation.
