Time to conserve
Water delivery service in Kugluktuk down to one truck

It's not a water crisis, but there have been some delays getting a second sewage truck running in Kugluktuk.

While it's not a state of emergency, said the hamlet garage supervisor Phillip Katik, people still need to be aware that there's only one truck on the road.

Currently under a notice to conserve water, residents have been asked to watch the amount of water they use while one truck is in the garage for repairs.

It's not an uncommon problem, so at least one of the two trucks is on the road, said David Angukana, the financial officer at the Hamlet of Kugluktuk.

"There was one day where both the trucks were down," Angukana said. "The boys came in the next day, and there were some internal adjustments done and now at least there's one on the road."

Katik said the problem is not major and the remaining truck that needs to be fixed won't be a problem.

That is, once the parts actually get delivered.

"It usually doesn't take long when the parts are available," he said. "If the parts are in stock, they ship them out right away. The delay is the airlines getting them here."

Residences in the community rely on getting their water delivered and their sewage trucked away and in this case, Katik said the delay is most likely with the airlines.

"We order our parts from Kingland in Hay River, and if they have them in stock, they get shipped right away, but sometimes they end up sitting in Yellowknife waiting for room on a flight," he said. "When you follow the tracker, you can see it's been shipped, but it's taking too long.

"It's just part of living in a Northern community, you depend on the airlines and you can't get too pissed off because they're the only ones who do it. You kind of have to rely on them."
