Five players are set to travel to the capital city on the weekend of July 26, along with their two coaches.

They will also be picking up another teammate in the city.

Coach Kerry Angidlik said the girls will be using the next few weeks to get used to playing under beach volleyball rules, which are slightly different than indoor.

"We're used to playing with six on the court and this is only two on two so it's a little bit different in the way you play your game," said Angidlik.

"But it will be a good experience for the girls. They don't always play volleyball in the summer so this is an opportunity to keep at it."

Tagalik Eccles, who has been a member of the team for two years, said she and the girls also need to work on blocking and serving.

"We need to learn how to serve if it's windy outside," she said.

In order to make the trip possible, the team has been fundraising to cover the cost of airfare.

They have received donations from businesses and also collected funds at a penny sale they ran.

On July 9 they brought in $200 by running a beach volleyball tournament near Williamson Lake.

Five men's teams and four women's teams entered. The registration fee was $20 per person.

Angidlik said she was pleased with the turnout but still would have liked to see more players.

"I thought we would have a few more teams but we advertised at the last minute so not everybody was aware," she said, adding they also had to compete with Nunavut Day celebrations.

The winners for the women's competition were Bundy Kaludjak and Stacy Anawak. Meanwhile, Nuvak Noolook and Jonah Nakoolak took first in the men's category.

The winning teams were each awarded $40.

Angidlik said she was impressed with the men's performance during the final game of the tournament.

"It was fairly close in the score but the winning team was just a bit stronger," she said.

"I think that they were spiking better and just having better sets and hits."

The volleyball team is still looking to raise about $600 to cover costs.

To get the money they plan to hold a dance and a jail and bail event, where they have people pay $20 to have the RCMP arrest somebody, then that person has to pay $10 to get bailed out.
