Sally Joyce, manager of Northern Images, said she's not sure exactly what time the gallery was broken into.

"Not much was stolen, they didn't enter the building," Joyce said, noting the thief or thieves only seemed to reach in from outside. "I'm very grateful for that."

The gallery carries pricey soapstone carvings and paintings by Inuit, Dene and other aboriginal artists. The store is part of Arctic Co-operatives Limited, an organization encompassing 31 different community-based co-operatives throughout Nunavut and the Northwest Territories.

Joyce, who continued serving customers throughout the day Wednesday, said she's disappointed the large display window, which wasn't even two years old, was smashed.

This is the first time Northern Images has been broken into but Joyce said she's aware of the risk of break-ins.

Yellowknife RCMP reported Thursday morning that it investigated the incident Wednesday with a forensic team. The investigation is ongoing.

Joyce said she was very pleased with the thorough investigative work done by the RCMP, but just wants to continue on with her business now.

The police ask anyone with information regarding the theft to call Crime Stoppers or Yellowknife RCMP.
