The woman was trapped under the front wheels of the truck for at least 20 minutes before emergency rescue crews were able to free her. The victim was conscious and breathing when she was taken to hospital.

She was later medevaced to Edmonton, and listed as being in serious but stable condition at press time.

According to RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Barry Ledoux, the accident occurred when the female driver of the truck, who was travelling northbound on Franklin, attempted to make a left turn onto 52 Street at approximately 10 a.m., at which point the woman was run over.

Toni-Lynn Elizabeth Buggins-Godin, 30, has been charged with driving while prohibited, careless driving, and failure to yield to a pedestrian. She was in police custody Thursday night and scheduled to appear in court today.

Yellowknifer spoke with Brandon Martel who was at the scene of the accident. He said he did not see the accident occur but did see the victim walking south on Franklin earlier. According to Martel, he saw the woman, who was walking with a cane, jaywalking at a red light at an intersection farther north on Franklin.

"She was crossing a red light down there when she shouldn't have been," said Martel, who helped her cross the road. "I saw her crossing at a red light, so I crossed with her just to make sure nothing went wrong."

He said the accident occurred after he exited Javaroma but was not looking in the direction of the accident and did not see it happen.

Ledoux said the RCMP are asking for any witnesses who saw the accident to come forward.

He also said police are looking for any witnesses who may have noticed irregular or erratic driving patterns by a dark green GMC extended cab pick-up truck.
