Fire department responds to smoke

A small cooking fire along Frame Lake that caused smoke to billow up behind the legislative assembly building on Monday night had fire officials taking to the trails. The fire was reported on the same day the City of Yellowknife implemented an ongoing city-wide fire ban for all open-air fires, including those in approved fire pits. Campground fires at territorial parks have also been banned.

Public Safety Director Dennis Marchiori was one of the people who called in to report the smoke.

Marchiori said the fire was put out without incident. No charges were involved.

The Department of Transportation made the restrictions after determining the bridge needed major truss strengthening and deck repairs.

Earl Blacklock, communications manager at the Department of Transportation, said after the required repairs are made, the bridge, built in 1960, should last for many more years.
