The school's track and field team brought home the Grand Aggregate Award from last week's territorial championships in Hay River. It's the second banner of the spring season for the school, along with the Senior Super Soccer U19 A division championship won last month.

The award is calculated by dividing the number of points a school accumulates in the competitions by the number of its students participating.

"Essentially this award means that we are the champions of the track meet," said principal Deb Maguire stated in an e-mail. "We had an average of 14.7 points per athlete with the next team being well behind us."

"Also we had the overall medal winners for each age category given out," she added.

"Kaidan McDonald, Caroline Kaufman and Matthew Skinner each won bronze medals overall for their age groups. The kids have all won various ribbons for placing in events and I would name them all but the email would take all day to read. The kids are feeling great about this accomplishment."

Six of the school's athletes were selected to take part in the Canada Summer Games selection camp for track and field as well in late July in Edmonton.

Selected for Team NWT were Chris Church – high jump, 200m; Matthew Skinner – triple jump, long jump; Emily Rutherford – 400m, 800m; Chloe Larocque – high jump, 200m; Kaidan McDonald – 200m, high jump; Karly King-Simpson – triple jump, long jump.

"They have until Saturday to make their decision if they are going or not," she said. "Stay tuned for another update on those who have committed to this."

Church said he was planning on accepting the invitation, as was Matthew Skinner.

"It's pretty awesome," Skinner said.

"I'm glad to be invited. A lot of hard work was put in," said Church.

Coach Dave Halpine won a gold medal for his overall performance in the Master's category. He downplayed the trophy, preferring to focus on the students achievement.

"There weren't as many (masters) competitors as last year," he said.
