News Briefs: Tuesday, March 27, 2013

Highway 3 accident victim identified

Police confirmed Tuesday that the man killed in a Highway 3 accident near Jackfish Lake on Saturday is Ricky Drybones, 38, of Behchoko.

Police were called after a Dodge Caravan driven by a 52-year-old man struck and killed Drybones, who was walking down the hill on Highway 3 near the entrance to the Jackfish Lake power plant.

Police say Drybones was wearing black clothing and was walking northwest toward the airport. Due to poor lighting in the area and the colour of Drybones' clothing, it made it difficult for the driver to see Drybones. Although the driver braked and tried to avoid the collision, he was unable to stop in time.

Staff Sgt. Brad Kaeding said police are still trying to determine where Drybones was standing at the time.

"Based on the information we have, it appears he was standing in the northwest-bound driving lane," said Kaeding.

No charges have been laid and the investigation is ongoing.

Putting the yellow back in Yellowknife

Daffodils are here again as the Canadian Cancer Society kicks off its spring fundraiser on March 28. There has already been $24,000 worth of daffodils sold through pre-orders in Yellowknife alone, said Lorna Deveau, the society's Yellowknife representative.

Daffodils can be purchased at Wal-Mart, the YK Centre Lower Mall, the Yellowknife Co-op, Extra Foods on Old Airport Road and the downtown Liquor Store.

Moving material

Baker Lake

Areva Resources has began transporting materials to its Kiggavik uranium site across its winter road.

The Kiggavik camp is located about 80 kilometres away from the community of Baker Lake.

The company is estimating it will take between four to six weeks to move the material to the site, including 200,000 litres of fuel and drilling equipment to be used this summer when Areva continues to test drill for uranium. Areva expects to have about 35 people employed at the Kiggavik site this summer.

Learning about law

Arviat

A special Arviat Law Day was held at the Arviat Community Learning Centre on March 25. The day had originally been scheduled to be held on March 14.

The event was sponsored by the Akitsiraq Law School and gave youth the opportunity to take a day to consider law as a career.

Photography course

Rankin Inlet

The Hamlet of Rankin Inlet is sponsoring a photography course this week from March 26 to 29 at the community's fire hall.

The course is aimed at people in the community who are interested in honing their skills and, hopefully, opening up a photography business.

Community Economic Development Officer Evan Morrison said enough interest in the program was shown on the hamlet's Facebook page for it to respond with funding for the course.

"It was a great example of people coming together for something they wanted in the community, and the hamlet responding to make it happen," said Morrison.

The course is being instructed by Dave Brosha of Yellowknife and will include a combination of lectures, talks and handson shooting.

Butting out?

Nunavut

The Government of Nunavut (GN) is reporting a 2.9 per cent drop in the sale of tobacco products between March and November 2012.

The GN said the drop represents more than 24,000 packs of cigarettes, and almost 800,000 grams of chewing tobacco.

The GN estimates the decrease in sales put more than $750,000 back into the pockets of Nunavummiut.

Exchange course

Rankin Inlet

Grade 7 and 8 students at Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik are tentatively scheduled to be welcoming a group of students from Southampton, Ont. this coming month as part of an exchange trip. A number of successful exchange programs between students and cadets have been held in Rankin during the past few years.
