Joshua Luke Petten, 21, was arrested early March 10 after police reported finding a loaded handgun, cocaine and an undisclosed amount of cash in a car found fleeing the downtown core.

Petten has not yet had a bail hearing but has reserved his right to that process. He is expected to appear in court by video March 26 to speak to the matter.

Meanwhile, his 17-year-old co-accused, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, also remains in custody. He has a bail hearing set for this morning.

Both are charged with possession of a restricted firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, carrying a weapon in a vehicle, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a narcotic.

Petten is further charged with two probation breaches and obstructing a police officer.

HIV-positive man changes plea

An HIV-positive man who is charged with three counts of aggravated sexual assault informed the court Wednesday that he wants to withdraw one of his guilty pleas.

Bobby Johnathan Kaotalok is accused of having sex with three women without telling them he is HIV positive.

Kaotalok was set to be sentenced when his lawyer, Thomas Boyd, informed the Supreme Court of the Northwest Territories of his client's wishes. As a result, the matter was adjourned until March 25 at 1:30 p.m.

At that time a judge will hear Kaotalok's application to withdraw his guilty plea. To be granted the change Kaotalok and his lawyer will have to prove the guilty plea is invalid.

Kaotalok remains in custody where he has been since he was arrested on Feb. 24, 2011.

Erratic driver fined $300

A motorist who was witnessed driving on the wrong side of the road and ignoring traffic signals has been fined a total of $300 for his actions.

The man appeared before a Justice of the Peace on March 14. He was convicted of failing to stop at a red light, careless driving, driving in the left lane when prohibited and failing to stop at a stop sign.

The incident dates back to the morning of Nov. 11 when the man was spotted driving erratically. A witness of the man's actions told Yellowknifer previously that he saw the motorist turn right from Borden Drive onto Old Airport Road and into oncoming traffic. The driver later ran a red light at Old Airport Road and Borden Drive near Wal-Mart. After that he continued to Range Lake Road where he drove through a stop sign.

He was stopped by police a short time later.
