Robert B. Gruben, former chair of the Tuktoyaktuk Community Corporation, was sentenced to six months in jail last week after pleading guilty to theft of more than $5,000.

The Crown said Gruben had wracked up more than $60,000 on a company credit card between June 2009 and July 2010.

The majority of the charges were from online gambling sites.

Gruben will likely serve his sentence in the territory, the Crown said.

He will also be on probation for two years after his release.

The Crown said Gruben took responsibility for his actions early and resigned from his position at the corporation.

He was replaced as chair in August 2010 after an election.

Gruben will also have to pay back the money and has already repaid $1,000.
