Two men now co-accused in stabbing

Two men charged with attempted murder of a 44-year-old Yellowknife man on Nov. 29 are now being charged jointly.

In territorial court on Monday, Crown prosecutor Mathew Johnson asked for the individual files of Tyson Ruben-Bucher, 19, and Dean Ruben, 23, to be withdrawn and for the case to proceed jointly. The men are now co-accused in the case of a stabbing that occurred at Fort Gary Apartments.

Thirty-eight-year-old Nancy Ruben is charged with aggravated assault in the incident, and two 17-year-old male youth who cannot be named, are also charged, one with attempted murder and one with aggravated assault.

Hockey action in Fort Providence

Fort Providence is hosting its annual hockey tournament this weekend.

The Kingland Ford Hockey Tournament will begin on Feb. 8. Five teams have registered for the tournament including two from Fort Providence and one each from Fort Simpson, Lutsel K'e and Behchoko.

The finals for the tournament will take place on Sunday afternoon. Last year the Hay River Eagle 88s won the tournament.

Film road tour coming to Fort Simpson

Fort Simpson has been chosen as one of six stops on the Yellowknife International Film Festival's Road Tour.

Western Arctic Moving Pictures is bringing a package of films that were shown at the sixth annual festival to six communities. The tour features films from the NWT as well as Nunavut, Alaska and southern Canada.

At each screening one of three feature length films will be shown along with a selection of short films. The tour will be in Fort Simpson, the only stop in the Deh Cho, on Feb. 23.

Four teams in volleyball tournament

A one-day volleyball tournament will be taking place in Fort Providence this weekend.

The Co-ed Classic Volleyball Tournament will be held on Feb. 9. The tournament would have been longer, but only four teams have registered, said Lawrence Nitsiza, the Hamlet of Fort Providence's recreation co-ordinator.

The competitors are set to include two teams from Fort Providence and one each from Behchoko and Fort Resolution. Last year three Fort Providence teams competed in the event.

Electoral boundaries reviewed

The Electoral Boundaries Commission has released an interim report which provides recommendations to the legislative assembly on how the electoral boundaries should be drawn in the territory if there are 18, 19 or 21 electoral districts.

Each of the three options would mean changes for the Deh Cho electoral district that currently includes Fort Providence, Kakisa, Enterprise and the Hay River Reserve.

None of the options effect the Nahendeh electoral district.

The commission will be holding public hearings across the North from Feb. 4 to March 13 to gather input into the three options. Territorial residents can also submit written comments by e-mail, fax or mail before March 28.

A fare question

Inuvik taxi rates will likely be changing sometime in the next few months.

After a request from the two Inuvik taxi companies to raise their rates, the town is now taking a comprehensive look at the issue.

Senior administrative officer Grant Hood said the bylaw will be overhauled in the process of the request from the companies. Inuvik cab drivers haven't had a raise in several years, he said, and the bylaw governing their use is likely overdue to be updated.

At the moment, Hood said he will be having the town lawyer peruse the bylaw. He expects a public meeting will be called sometime in the next few months.

"We'll have the taxi companies present their reasons for an increase to the public at that meeting," he said. "I've been told there's only two things in Inuvik that bring people out to public meetings, and that's dogs and taxis. So we're expecting a good turnout."

Film fest comes North

Western Arctic Moving Pictures is bringing a package of films from the sixth annual Yellowknife International Film Festival on a tour of the NWT, and will stop in Inuvik on Feb. 28.

The YKIFF Road Tour showcases film and new media works from all over the Canadian and circumpolar North, with selected international works.

The featured films are: People of a Feather, On the Ice, Tunnit, Inuit High Kick, Lumaajuuq, Doubles with Slight Pepper, Ice Realtors, Caribou, and The Dancing Cop.

Legislative assembly back in session

Finance Minister Michael Miltenberger announced Tuesday he will release the GNWT's budget for operational spending in 2013-14 on Feb. 8.

Inuvialuit applaud ruling

Inuit organizations across Canada are applauding a Jan. 30 Ontario Superior Court of Justice decision that requires the federal government to provide to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission all relevant federal documents related to the legacy, past and present, of residential schools in Canada.

The application to clarify the obligation of Canada with respect to federal documents, including documents at Library and Archives Canada, was filed by the commission with the support of Inuit organizations and the Assembly of First Nations.
