NORTHWEST TERRITORIES
Voters in a number of NWT communities hit the polls Dec. 10, voting in the next leaders of council.

The municipal election results are in for Aklavik, Fort McPherson, Paulatuk, Tuktoyaktuk, Ulukhaktok and Fort Resolution.

Aklavik

Four council positions were won in Aklavik, which recorded a voter turnout of 35 per cent. Of the 426 eligible voters, 147 cast a ballot, electing councillors Billy Archie, Michael Greenland, Eugene Pascale, and Richard Storr Sr.

Of a field of eight council candidates, Taig Connel led the way to election with 77 votes, followed by Johnny Peterson, elected with 74, Krista Jerome, 72 votes, and Shaylene Allen with 64 votes.

Voter turnout, at 26 per cent, was "very poor," said Richard Wilson, senior administrative officer for the hamlet.

"It was almost 40-below last night. I don't know if that has anything to do with it," he said.

Just 136 of the 526 voters on the list voted.

Paulatuk

Four councillors won the election in Paulatuk.

Keith Dodge led the way with 90 votes, and Jonah Nakimayak, Michael Green, and Donna Ruben were also voted in with 72, 51, and 44 votes, respectively.

Of the 240 eligible voters, 117 cast ballots - about 49 per cent.

Tuktoyaktuk

Darrel Nasogaluak led the field of 12 candidates in the council election with 152 votes cast.

Also elected to Tuktoyaktuk council are Gloria Elias-Gruben with 126 votes, John Russell, 124, Annie Felix, 123, and Dennis Raddi, 118.

The total number of voters was 274, of 561 eligible voters on the list.

Ulukhaktok/Holman

The community voted in Susan Kaodloak as the next mayor of Ulukhaktok, with 56 votes.

Kaodloak ran against four other candidates for mayor, to replace outgoing mayor Janet Kanayok, who will remain in the position until Dec. 31.

Councillors elected are Connie Alanak, with 92 votes, Tyler Inuktalik, 90 votes, Mardon Martin, 86 votes, Margaret Kanayok, 80 votes, Mollie Oliktoak, 78 votes, Agnes Kuptana, 77 votes, Tracey Kanayok, 76 votes, and Jack Akhiatak, 75 votes.

Voter turnout was roughly 44 per cent, with 119 of 268 eligible voters turning out.

Deninu Ku'e/Fort Resolution

Three councillors were elected in the Hamlet of Fort Resolution on Dec. 10.

The top vote-getter was Tammy Hunter, who collected 141 votes.

Two incumbents, Brandie Miersch and Gordon Beaulieu, were re-elected to council. Miersch collected 118 votes, while Beaulieu garnered 108 votes.

The election in Fort Resolution saw an impressive 78 per cent voter turnout. Of the 359 eligible voters, 281 cast ballots.

"The voter turnout was very high," said Tausia Kaitu'u-Lal, senior administrative officer with the Hamlet of Fort Resolution.

Adding the turnout was the highest she can remember.

Kaitu'u-Lal said she is not sure why the turnout was so high, although she speculated it may have been because of the large number of candidates and the fact so many well-known residents of the community were running.

The three successful candidates have been elected for two-year terms on council and will be sworn in early in the new year.

The Fort Resolution hamlet council consists of six councillors and a mayor.

There were eight candidates.

The unsuccessful candidates were Louis Balsillie, 97 votes, Arthur Beck, 93 votes, Wilfred Simon, 74 votes, Stephen Cuthbert, 48 votes, and Freddy Collins, 37 votes.

Enterprise

In Enterprise, three people were earlier acclaimed to council - incumbents Jim Dives and Tammy Neal, and former mayor Allan Flamand.

They were the only candidates for three open seats when nominations closed.

The nomination period in Enterprise had been extended from Nov. 12 to Nov. 19.

The Enterprise hamlet council consists of six councillors and a mayor.
