Hot soup on Friday

For the second year, the Rotary Club of Yellowknife True North is hosting its hot soup project.

Serving from outside the post office on Franklin Avenue on Friday from noon until 1 p.m., Rotarians will offer bowls of chicken noodle soup and potato corn chowder to passersby.

The Extra Foods grocery store donated the ingredients, bowls and cutlery for the event and Chef Pierre LePage is preparing the soups.

Tea for seniors

All seniors are invited to a seasonal tea at the legislative assembly beginning at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, said the executive director of the Yellowknife Senior's Society.

"Anyone who is a senior can come, but we're not going to be discriminatory," said Kimberly Doyle.

While being served tea in the Great Hall, participants will be entertained by the K'alemi Dene Grade 2 and 3 singers, the Fiddlecats and Ardith Dean, who will lead a Christmas sing-a-long.

All Yellowknife MLAs and Premier Bob McLeod are scheduled to attend.

Toy drive ending

The YWCA and the Bank of Montreal are collecting toys for children in need until Friday.

The toy drive is to benefit children staying at the Alison McAteer House, Yellowknife's only family violence shelter. While the need to provide food, shelter and safety through the season, and rest of the year, is critical, the goal of the drive is to bring a little bit of play to children.

Donations can be dropped off at the bank branch on Range Lake Road.
