CHESTERFIELD INLET
Chesterfield Inlet now has a little more to offer its younger community members, especially during the days of summer.

And, the hamlet's ball players are also smiling over upgrades to the local ball diamond earlier this year.

Community economic development officer David Kattegatsiak said the project was approved during the spring of 2011 by Culture, Language, Elders and Youth's Sports and Recreation Division.

He said the playground saw a great deal of activity when it was completed just this past summer, and the ball diamond was also put to good use.

"The playground is, definitely, a very welcome addition to our community," said Kattegatsiak.

"It's been a prime site for the kids, tots and some youths to gather and play since day one, and it's been just ongoing from there.

"So far our youths have shown respect for the playground, and we haven't had any form of vandalism or damage done on purpose since it opened.

"As for the ball diamond, I can't say we have a lot of ballplayers here, but we do have a number of players who are enjoying the upgrades to the field."

Kattegatsiak said Chester sent a team to at least one ball tournament in Rankin Inlet this past summer, and the upgrades to the field should help them get better with time.

He said there's also some pride involved with having new dugouts, bleachers and a chainlink fence at the field.

"We also have a new canteen and storage shed at the field, so it's a significant upgrade.

"With these upgrades, there's a possibility somewhere down the road we might try to host a tournament here and see how it goes.

"That's probably a bit in the future yet, but I'm sure it's something the community will look forward to when we're ready."
