Mayoral candidates Paul Falvo and Mark Heyck will square off in a mock “koon-ut-kal-if-fee” battle similar to the one Spock and Capt. Kirk endured during a 1967 television episode of Star Trek, entitled Amok Time.

Mimicking one of Star Trek's most epic battles, the “koon-ut-kal-if-fee” between Kirk and Spock on the planet Vulcan, mayoral candidates Paul Falvo and Mark Heyck will dual for a good cause.

A friendly Facebook post by mutual friend Kate Guay, regarding the veteran city councillors' mayoral run was the genesis of the playful bout.

"I was just in a playful mood and I realized Paul and Mark are great candidates (and it would be difficult to choose one). So, I thought the best way to resolve this would be a battle between Kirk and Spock," said Guay.

After accepting the challenge, Falvo recommended that the fight be used to raise money for the NWT SPCA. The councillors are looking to raise at least $1,000 for the animal welfare group. The SPCA requests that all cheques and online donations through Canada Helps are marked 'Star Trek' so the organization may keep a running total.

The big question is, who will be Spock and who will be Kirk?

"That decision will be decided by the (winner of mayoral seat)," said Falvo. "Otherwise we'll both be arguing over who gets to be Kirk."

"I like Kirk but I also like Spock because he's logical," said Heyck, when asked on his preference.

"I can see Mark being Spock," said Guay. "I guess Paul can be the lady killer."

Tim Doyle, the other mayoral candidate, found the Vulcan death fight between Falvo and Heyck amusing.

"It's a creative idea," said Doyle with a chuckle. "It's all in good fun. Good luck to them .... I'll go and watch and maybe be a judge."

When asked if he would participate, Doyle goodheartedly replied,"It's not (something) I can take part in... I'm a Star Wars guy."

Doyle noted he has also been fundraising for local non-profits such as the Terry Fox Run and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

The two councillors will battle it out – after the election – on Oct. 31, although the location and the type of warfare used has yet to be decided.
