It was part of a whirlwind tour of Operation Nanook, something the minister tries to accomplish each year.

"Every year he tries to visit Operation Nanook," said Capt. Sandra Levesque.

He attended a briefing at the temporary base in Inuvik before visiting the camp in Tsiigehtchic. MacKay planned to be in the Mackenzie Delta area for only one night.

"It's usually a big morale boost for everyone and he meets as many people as he has time for," said Levesque.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper is also visiting the North this week. He is expected to be in Norman Wells, his only stop in the NWT, on Wednesday before proceeding to Cambridge Bay, Nunavut.
