Police have arrested a youth in connection with a sexual assault on a 44-year-old woman in Yellowknife, Thursday.

Police were alerted to the incident at about 9 p.m.

When they arrived on 52 Street near the Coast Fraser Tower they found a woman sitting on the ground by herself.

Police were told a sexual assault was committed outside the building by two males - the suspects are aged 14 and 15. The Mounties say the woman didn't know the youth. The 15-year-old appeared in territorial court Friday afternoon.

He was released from custody on the conditions that he reside at his parents house and that he not leave the property between 5 p.m. and 7 a.m.

Police were still looking for the other teen, who is known to them, as of press deadline. The names of the youth will not be released.

Const. Kathy Law said incidents like this shouldn't stop people from enjoying Yellowknife.

"Just be aware of what's going on around you and take all safety precautions when you're out walking," Law said. "Try and go with other people, have your dog with you."
