Aglukkaq criticizes seal hunt ban bill

OTTAWA
Conservative Nunavut MP Leona Aglukkaq pushed back this week against Ontario Liberal Senator Mac Harb's proposed bill to end Canada's commercial seal hunt, which he introduced May 2.

"Claims by animal rights organizations and their spokespeople like Mac Harb that shutting down the seal hunt won't affect Northerners are complete fiction," stated Aglukkaq, who is also regional minister for the North and the minister responsible for the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency.

Harb had twice tried to have the Senate debate the issue, but he could not find a seconder, even within his own party.

Then British Columbia Senator Larry Campbell finally seconded the motion, allowing for debate. As Conservatives attack the move, Liberals are also coming out against the bill.

Newfoundland and Labrador Senator George Baker told the CBC the bill won't pass.

Aglukkaq called on Liberal leader Bob Rae to ask Harb to withdraw the bill.
