The North is not immune to the federal job cuts in the wake of this year's budget, released last month - 14 federal department positions have been cut so far.

According to the Public Service Alliance of Canada, Natural Resources will lose nine positions in the North while Public Safety will lose two and the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency will lose three.

Some 200 federal public servants work in Nunavut, said Julie Docherty, regional executive vice-president for the North with the Public Service Alliance of Canada.

"We don't know which positions they're cutting yet. So it's going to be a wait-and-see situation, especially across the North," she said. "They've released 11 positions that are going to be affected in the North and there's going to be more than that."

More cuts are expected, said Docherty.

Parks Canada's budget will also be reduced by $6 million this fiscal year and by $19.7 million in 2013-2014 and then $29.2 million in 2014-2015. The budget states savings will be achieved through consolidation and streamlining of administration as well as program management and planning.

The budget of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development will be reduced by $24.4 million for 2012-2013 and $55 million in 2013-2014.

The budget states savings will be achieved through restructuring and operational efficiencies.
