Woman found dead in hotel

The NWT's chief coroner is investigating after a 52-year-old woman was found by a hotel maid dead in a room at the Explorer Hotel on Sunday.

"We were called to an incident but it's not a criminal investigation," said RCMP Const. Kathy Law Tuesday.

Chief coroner Cathy Menard said the woman's body has been sent for a post-mortem. "Everything we have is leaning toward natural causes," Menard said. The NWT resident had apparently arrived in Yellowknife last weekend and had reported feeling unwell, said Menard.

Power outage investigated

The NWT Power Corporation is investigating the cause of a power outage that turned out the lights in Yellowknife at 8:30 a.m. Monday.

"We lost the line between the Snare to the Snare Forks generating station and that took out the Snare Cascades site as well. Snare Rapids stayed online, Bluefish stayed online and we had diesel online," said Robert Schmidt, director of hydro for the NWT Power Corporation, Monday morning. Power was restored everywhere by 9:01a.m.

More kimberlites at Lac de Gras

Peregrine Diamonds Ltd. has announced the discovery of two more kimberlites at Lac de Gras.

Tom Hoefer, executive director of the NWT and Nunavut Chamber of Mines, said Peregrine's two discoveries within such a short field season are indications of just how much potential there is in the area.

The kimberlites were discovered in early April during core drilling of two land-based geophysical targets. Peregrine plans to complete its five-target drilling program in May.

Ice roads remain open

The ice road across the Mackenzie River at Fort Providence and the Dettah ice road remain open to all traffic, although that will likely change by this weekend.

"We are starting to have rough edges and a little bit of water on the shores of the Mackenzie River, however, we don't intend to restrict vehicles for the next few days, but by the weekend we expect we will be looking at large vehicles only," said Michael Conway, the Department of Transportation's regional superintendent for the North Slave.

He expects the Dettah ice road to remain open to all traffic until Monday.

The Angilak Project is home to the highgrade Lac Cinquante uranium deposit, located about 235 km southwest of Baker Lake. The information session will be held in the meeting room at the local Coop's Turaarvik Inns North from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m.

The ecotourism initiative is being led by Arviat tourism development officer Olivia Tagalik under the guidance of The Tourism Company.

Hockey teams off to Iqaluit

Repulse Bay/Rankin Inlet - The Naujaat Whalers (Repulse Bay) and M&T Enterprises squad from Rankin Inlet will be representing the Kivalliq at the annual Toonik Tyme senior men's hockey championship in Iqaluit this coming weekend.

Both teams will be riding hot streaks going into the Iqaluit tourney, with Naujaat having captured its first First Air Sakku Avataq Cup championship this season and M&T fresh off of its A Division championship in Yellowknife earlier this month.

Naujaat captain Rodney Taparti suited up with M&T in Yellowknife, but Rankin will be out to avenge the Avataq loss should the two teams run into each other in the Toonik Tyme tournament.
