IQALUIT
The identity of the two people who died at the Creekside Village fire in Iqaluit late last month should be known sometime this week, stated police.

Two people died when a blaze destroyed 22 apartment units part of Creekside Village in the territorial capital on Feb. 26. The fire left 85 people homeless, mostly Arctic College students and family.

The autopsies on both victims were performed in Ottawa and their identities will be determined through dental records and radiology, stated RCMP Const. Angelique Dignard in a press release. She added determining the final cause of death could take up to eight weeks, pending toxicology results.

The Iqaluit RCMP and the fire marshal's office, along with an expert fire investigator from Saskatchewan, continue their investigation into the fire.

"The investigation is complex due to several factors, including the weather conditions, the size of the building and subsequently the mass of debris," stated Cst. Dignard. "The methodical work of the forensic and fire experts is time consuming."
