Gina Pizzo: "Felt very honoured I had been nominated."

Pizzo was chosen because she aims to provide a positive school environment through a partnership with staff, parents, elders and the community, stated Norma Meneguzzi Spall, the media contact for the Learning Partnership's announcement, via e-mail.

She added Pizzo has brought a number of initiatives, such as a spring seal hunt and fall cultural camp. She also provides staff with the resources and training they need to make the school a more engaging learning environment.

Pizzo and the other 39 recipients will be honoured during a gala dinner and awards ceremony in Toronto on Feb. 28. They will also participate in a five-day leadership program.

"I felt very honoured I had been nominated at all and that I won, it was even a greater surprise," Pizzo said.

She added she found out a couple of weeks ago she had won.

Pizzo arrived in Taloyoak some 27 years ago, first working at Netsilik School as a junior high teacher for four years before becoming the principal. She is originally from Thorold, Ont., in the Niagara Peninsula.

"So it's certainly the cherry on top of the sundae for a 30-year career," she said. "It's always nice to receive recognition like this and it's particularly gratifying when it's your own peers and supervisors and people from the community who have nominated you and recommended you."

Principals from across Canada are nominated by their peers, school staff and community members before the National Selection Committee chooses the winners, this year based on 60 pre-selected nominations.

The outstanding principals program, in its eighth year, has already honoured some 219 principals.

"We are proud to celebrate the achievements of these extraordinary principals," stated Veronica Lacey, president and CEO of the Learning Partnership, in a press release. "Their dedication to enhancing our public education system clearly demonstrates the importance of strong leadership in education."
