Anthony Griep was in court again Tuesday, this time facing a charge for threatening to rape a woman.

Griep pleaded guilty to uttering threats during a conversation on Facebook. Crown prosecutor Alex Godfrey presented evidence that on Nov. 17, 2011, Griep was talking with a male acquaintance on the social networking site when the two began arguing. As the argument escalated, Griep, 25, threatened he would "rape" the person's mother.

The acquaintance informed his mother of the threat and she reported it to police. She also forwarded a transcript of the Facebook conversation.

Godfrey said the victim felt the threat was serious and believed Griep would do it, given Griep's criminal record, which includes a recent conviction for sexual assault.

During sentencing on Tuesday afternoon, defence lawyer Tom Boyd argued the comments were taken out of context, saying his client and the acquaintance had been exchanging rap lyrics and that Griep's comments were based on those lyrics, but Boyd admitted they went too far.

During sentencing, which took approximately five minutes, Griep sat silently in the courtroom, declining to speak for himself.

Judge Christine Gagnon fined him $300 to be paid within six months, and gave him nine months probation with the condition that he not have any contact with the victim or her son. On Jan. 25 Griep pleaded guilty to sexual assault stemming from a brutal 2008 attack on the Frame Lake Trail. On June 5, 2008, Griep grabbed a 19-year-old woman who was walking home along the trail, dragged her into nearby bushes and sexually assaulted her. He is to be back in court March 6 to be sentenced for the sexual assault conviction.

He remains free until then under court conditions to report in person to the RCMP Monday and Friday and by phone Wednesday.
