TALOYOAK/SPENCE BAY
Police say the Feb. 2 fire at a Taloyoak four-plex that killed a woman and her two children was part of a murder-suicide.

RCMP investigators, an RCMP fire investigator, a Nunavut fire investigator and an RCMP forensics specialist agree Sarah Aiyout, 24, intentionally started the fire that killed her and her sons Victor Jr., 4, and Jordee, 2, police said in a statement released Feb. 25.

The government is sending mental health workers to the community to help residents cope with the news.

A funeral for the Aiyouts was held Tuesday.

The fire started at about 7 p.m. Feb. 2. The fire department put out the fire and the occupants of the other three units were able to escape safely.

Nunavut News/North reported Feb. 6 that their homes sustained extensive damage and were likely uninhabitable.

Police say the on-site investigation will continue in the spring when the building is free of ice and safe to enter.
