Yellowknife Catholic Schools (YCS) will be holding a parent engagement night at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 13, at St. Joseph School.

This will be the third year parents will be invited to participate in this type of evening. The first year, 10 parents attended. Last year, there were about 30 parents, board chair Mary Vane told the crowd of nearly 300 community members who attended last Wednesday's meeting to show support for superintendent Claudia Parker and assistant superintendent Johnnie Bowden.

"If you're that eager, we expect to have you all out at St. Joseph's School," she said.

The February board of trustees meeting is scheduled for the following Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 7:30 p.m. at the downtown YCS board office.

Five-day play at St. Joseph School

St. Joseph School principal Gillian Dawe-Taylor took the opportunity to thank the board for their $20,000 in funding to the school for fine arts in her presentation to the board of trustees.

"Arts have been reduced over the years for many reason," said Dawe-Taylor. "I can't thank you enough for recognizing how critical the arts are to learning,"

The elementary school will be holding a production of Little Red Riding Hood, which will be going from the page to the stage within five days, said Dawe-Taylor.

The process will start on Monday morning, Jan. 30, when any kindergarten to Grade 8 student may audition for a part in the play. Roles will be assigned by that afternoon when rehearsals will begin in preparation for that Friday, when shows will be staged at 1:30, 5 and 7 p.m. Proceeds from ticket sales will got towards future arts programs in the school.

"I actually believe that this may be a first for Yellowknife schools," said Dawe-Taylor about the condensed production process.

Better crosswalk in the works at 44th and Franklin

City of Yellowknife officials have agreed to beef up a crosswalk at the intersection of Franklin Avenue and 44 Street, said board trustee Simon Taylor.

Many students from Weledeh School, St. Patrick High School and Sir John Franklin High School use the intersection to cross Franklin but there are concerns that the current signage is hard to see.

Taylor first raised concerns about the crosswalk during December's board meeting. Last Wednesday, he told the board that the city's support allows the project of revamping the crosswalk to move forward.
