Errors found in phone bills

One Bell Mobility customer in Iqaluit was charged long-distance fees for local calls, a problem the company said it's aware of and trying to fix.

Omar Zahabi said he started noticing the problem earlier this month after a fellow subscriber suggested he checked his cell phone bill.

Zahabi said his Bell Mobility bill for November was $188 and December's was $130 - more than double the $50 to $60 he said he usually pays.

The problem might not be limited to those two months because he hasn't gone back to check the other bills.

"The clue was the phone call originated from Iqaluit and it was destined to an 867 number ... which is also in Iqaluit as well, but the long-distance time and charge (was added)," said the three-year Bell Mobility subscriber.

"I was upset to see us being even charged for fees they have no right to charge us on," Zahabi said.

He said he also noticed the telephone calls were routed through the United States.

He added he knows two people who also have the same billing issue.

He added Bell Mobility offered to refund the charges after he contacted the company twice.

Albert Lee, a spokesman for Bell Canada, said they are working on the issue.

"Some calls are randomly miscoded as being long-distance," he stated via e-mail.

"While we believe only a small number of customers have been affected, we invite customers in the area to review their bills and contact us if they believe there are any errors. We will be adjusting bills for customers affected."

As for Zahabi, he said he's concerned it's the affected customers who have to contact Bell Mobility and not vice-versa.

"At least a text message should have been sent to each and every one of us saying, 'There is a known issue with overbilling for the following month and we are working on it,'" he said.
