A man accused of robbing a cab driver at knifepoint in early December is in trouble with the law once again.

Police were called to a theft at Willy's convenience store on Range Lake Road, formerly known as Linh's, next to Sam's Monkey Tree Gas Bar, at 4:20 p.m. on Sunday.

"The cash register was open at the time, and (the thief) walked in, grabbed the money and left," said Const. Kathy Law, spokesperson for Yellowknife RCMP.

Although officers and a police dog were at the store within three to five minutes, they were unable to locate a suspect, said Law.

"Later that evening, a male matching the description of the suspect was arrested - and he was arrested for breaching his recognizance from prior charges," said Law.

"They were able to determine that it appears he was involved in this theft and charged him with theft under $5,000 and disguise with intent to commit an offence."

Reports indicated that the suspect had a hoodie pulled over his face, which led to the second charge, Law said.

Sean Qitsualik, 26 of Yellowknife, was on conditional release related to charges of robbery and attempted robbery of two Yellowknife cab drivers in the early morning of Dec. 3.

Of the 23 charges Qitsualik is facing, eight are robbery and theft-related while 15 charges relate to breach of probation or conditions of release.

He was arrested on Dec. 3 but the RCMP did not get approval to remand him into custody, said Law.

Qitsualik appeared before territorial court chief Judge Robert Gorin Wednesday and Thursday. The court dates were already scheduled to deal with the accused's previous charges, however the most recent charges were added to Thursday's docket.

Thursday's proceedings were held over because public defender Jay Bran had excused himself from the case due to a conflict of interest.

Qitsualik's co-accused in the December cab driver robbery is a client of Bran's office.

Qitsualik is to appear in court next on Monday.
