The Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency has a new president.

Patrick Borbey will assume the presidency of the federal agency on Dec. 19, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced on Dec. 8. Borbey is currently the senior assistant deputy minister, treaties and aboriginal government with the Department of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development.

He replaces interim president Colleen Swords.

This fall, a leaked comptroller general internal audit alleged serious financial mismanagement at the federal government agency.

Borbey holds an MBA from the University of Ottawa and was the assistant deputy minister for Health Canada from 2002 to 2005, the Privy Council Office from 2005 to 2006 and Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, now AANDC, from 2006 to 2010.
