Pickles, a Nunavut Teacher Educator Program instructor, had his short story, Changing The World One Pencil At A Time, published in The Path To Success, a book which featured a number of entrepreneur-type writers.

He recently completed his own manuscript, Hug Someone You Love Today, but would like to add a few stories from around the Kivalliq, if possible.

Pickles said the inspiration for his book came shortly after he began teaching.

Having difficulties with a particular student, he asked another teacher for advice on the situation.

"It was only my second year teaching and I didn't really know all the strategies," said Pickles.

"I went to a fellow teacher about it and she handed me a little hug-somebody-you-love-today card she had photocopied.

"When students were having a hard time she'd hand these cards to them to show she cared, so I handed a card to this one student.

"After that, while I still had some minor issues with the little guy, it wasn't the same as it was before."

Pickles was convinced the card worked and still carries it with him today.

He then started handing the card to people and asking them to write him about the affect it had on their lives or those they passed it onto.

"That's really how it started," said Pickles.

"There's so much war, violence and negativity in the media today, I felt maybe people could use some true, heartfelt, uplifting stories to comfort their spirits."

Pickles said his American publisher would like him to send the manuscript now, but he'd like to collect a few more stories.

He said although he could send the manuscript today, he'd like the book to be more "meaty," and that means more stories.

"The more stories, the better the book's going to be.

"So, I'm hoping some people in the region will send me their hug stories.

"I'd like to have the manuscript in and the book published by June.

"That doesn't mean it's going to happen, but that's my target."
