The annual organizational meeting in the Yk 1 office on Franklin Avenue got underway with trustee Mira Hall nominating Allan Shortt for another term as chairman of the board, which was seconded by John Stephenson. As there were no other nominations for the position, the nomination was passed unanimously.

"I would like to thank everybody and I hope we have another successful year with me as your chair," Shortt told the board after accepting his nomination.

Only one candidate was nominated for the position of vice-chair, with Duff Spence calling for John Stephenson to regain his role.

Standing committees and parental advisory committee representatives were then assigned by Shortt to Stephenson and the remaining five board trustees: Hall, Spence, Terry Brookes, Reanna Erasmus and Blake Lyons.

There were only two changes in parental advisory committee representatives for the 2011-12 school year: Hall will now work with the Sir John Franklin High School committee and Erasmus will move from Sir John to fill Hall's past role at William McDonald Middle School.

Erasmus was the only trustee not in attendance at the meeting.

During the regular meeting of the board of trustees held directly after the organizational meeting, superintendent Metro Huculak said he is very pleased with what he has been seeing around Yk 1 schools during his recent school and classroom visits.

"It's been really pleasant to visit the schools and see what's happening," he said.

Specifically, Huculak said he is especially impressed with the positive attitudes expressed by the majority of students in the district's schools.
