The animal is thought to be a cross between a caribou and a reindeer, though the Hunters and Trappers Committee are still unsure as to what species the animal actually is.

It has been a strange year for animal sightings all around, according to John Max Kudlak, president of the Paulatuk HTC.

There have been unusual reports of polar bears and grizzly bears in or near town, salmon being harvested hundreds of kilometres away from where they are normally supposed to be, and a turkey vulture was the talk of the town when it took up residence at the dump for a few days - that animal is not remembered to have ever been that far North before.

As for the caribou, or whatever it is, it's exact genealogy may remain a mystery for now.

"We could sure use some help identifying which species it is," said Kudlak.
